Happy Birthday Roz Warren!
For those of you who are unfortunate enough to have never found Roz Warren, allow this reading experience to be your gateway to well written and hilarious Medium content.
Roz has been contributing to Medium for a really long time (not sure how long), and produces typically short, snappy, and funny pieces of work.
I discovered her over a year ago when she reached out with a story she wrote about her experience during a flight. She wanted to add it to my first publication, The Mile High Club. I read it and found it funny and relatable, so I added her as a writer and posted the story.
I remember checking out her profile and seeing that she’d written for the New York Times and was justifiably gobsmacked. I also remember lowering my laptop screen and shouting out to my partner “she’s written for the New York Times! My gaaaaaaaaddd!”
After posting Warren’s story, my excitement melted into jealous rage when her story jumped to the top of my publication’s viewership stats, only overtaken when she contributed a second story months later! I was furious, but in a much more real sense, impressed by someone who garners so much respect on the platform.
I was also so grateful that her excellent work brought new eyes to my humble pub, and happy to have discovered someone who’s work makes me laugh whenever I’m scrolling through the site.
My usual daily experience scrolling through the Medium homepage goes something like this:
‘How I made a million dollars on social media today!’ – Groan..
‘Confessions from an itchy vagina’ – ikk, not for me..
‘Trump Trump Trump’ – I’ve had enough Trump for one lifetime..
‘Orthodox Barbie Gets Married’ – by Roz Warren – HEEEELL YES
As much as I love reading Warren’s work, I actually enjoy reading the comments made by others almost as much. Her stories usually attract a lot of interaction, and it’s because her voice is so relatable. She’s open and generous with everyone she interacts with on the platform, and writes exactly what she truly feels.
Whatever she’s mad at on Medium or out in the world, she turns into a story that’s well written and a joy to read.
She’s just cool.. is basically the point I’m trying to make.
Anyway, happy birthday Roz! I hope in spite of the state of the world, you found a way to make it joyful.
