As a teacher in Shanghai, I’m fortunate not to see anyone in poverty. But all of the students I teach are under immense pressure. I’m required to set high standards, but I do what I can to somehow lesson their burden while I’m teaching, whether that be by giving out little prizes, playing music, stopping for short games, whatever I can do. The pressure they’re under would crush me, my hope for them is that they’ll all make it to adulthood without attempting to exit early, although statistically some will.
