Probably one of the most bizarre conversations I’ve had this year so far is one that I had with a colleague of mine.
I work for a company that is contracted by the education bureau of the Chinese Government. There’s not a chance in hell you’ve ever heard of it, and there’s no reason you’d ever aspire to work here. So why, dear god why, was my colleague in tears when considering leaving?
The bizarre conversation I was having was in regards to their feeling of loyalty to the company. …
Right now I’m waiting in line at the brand new Five Guys restaurant in Shanghai, China.. and it’s goddamn packed.
You read right right, the everyday American eatery has garnered enough local buzz to warrant lines that can stretch around the block, and hundreds of scalpers are looking to make a profit.
I’m somewhat of an enthusiastic gamer, meaning that I enjoy games, but am not particularly talented at playing them well.
Recently, I’ve been getting back into the universally beloved game ‘Stardew Valley’ and it has been an incredible experience all over again.
The game was patched with a big update a few months ago that added many new features, including the ability to play split screen on the Nintendo Switch. This has meant long nights with my partner working together on our farm to build up our shared resources and improve our virtual life together.
While re-playing this game, I’ve…
I’ve been living in Shanghai for four years, and a lot has changed in that time.
I’ve seen developers knock down enormous neighbourhoods and build skyscrapers in mere months, I’ve seen the whole city completely empty during the height of the stay at home orders; And I’ve seen Chinese kids and teenagers do everything they can to try and unnerve their weird and high energy “foreign teacher.”
I work here as a drama teacher, which is a really weird job to have in a country where drama is not a standard subject. Drama is only offered by a few schools…
Two weeks ago, we were gifted with the second trailer for Disney’s upcoming villain-focused film, ‘Cruella’.
The new trailer introduced us to the film’s antagonist, a rival and senior designer (played by Emma Thompson) who opened the trailer with this gem;
“Let me give you this advice, you can’t care about anyone else. Everyone else is an obstacle. You care what an obstacle wants or feels you’re dead. If I’d cared about anyone or thing I might have died. You have the talent, whether you have the killer instinct is a big question.”
While we’re listening to Thompson, we see…
You know what I haven’t heard in a while?
“Hey! You’ve got to check out this amazing new Netflix show, it’ll rock your world!”
I remember years ago when ‘House of Cards’ blew all of our socks off, followed quickly by ‘Orange is the New Black’ and its compelling drama yet terrible theme song.
People everywhere predicted that Netflix wouldn’t just sweep the Emmy’s, but soon the Oscars; and very soon after that would dominate all other entertainment giants with its killer library of undeniable content.
But years passed, and Netflix continued making content at a record pace.. …
Roughly this time last year I was chosen from among millions of people to receive an official Medium t-shirt, sent to me in the mail.
Me! A random Australian guy living in China. I’m not even in the US.
I haven’t even been to the US since Obama was president.
Yes, I was chosen. But not by Medium, I chose myself.
Also, the shirt was in no way official, or affiliated with Medium in any way.
Regardless, it was an honour, and has provided me with an unearned feeling of satisfaction ever since.
But today was different. I received an…
Over a year ago, I used some of the money I’d earned writing for this site to purchase $2,000 worth of shares.
This was right as the market was crashing, at least in part as a result of the spread of Coronavirus. So I saw it as an opportunity to explore some theories I’d had about the stock market that I’d always wanted to verify.
I was determined to prove that share prices crashing is never a reason to quickly bail from the market. …
I have said this many times before, but it bears repeating in light of how I have flittered my way through 2021 so far… I am very easily distracted.
I’m someone that always needs to write, but where I publish my content is constantly shifting, and unfortunately, it’s almost impossible for me to keep focused on anything for more than a short period of time.
Medium has been by far the most consistent outlet for my writing, even though I am often suddenly missing for large gaps of time. I joined the platform almost two years ago, and while I…
Video Essayist, fiction author, and YouTube personality Lindsay Ellis unwittingly became the latest “Twitter Villain” last month when one of her Tweets went viral. (In a bad way).
After watching Disney’s latest animated film ‘Raya and the last Dragon’, Ellis Tweeted;
“Also watched Raya and the Last Dragon and I think we need to come up with a name for this genre that is basically Avatar: the Last Airbender reduxes. It’s like half of all YA fantasy published in the last few years anyway.”
People across Twitter interpreted this Tweet as a “straight white person” mashing all Asian fiction content…
